iHateSpam is one of the few packages that will allow you to set threshold levels to control how strict you want to monitor your incoming email. The default setting is "Average" which will quarantine most junk mail and reduce the chances of catching Spam. You can raise the level to "All Spam" which will quarantine all junk mail. Or, if you want minimal filtering, you can set it to "Some Spam".
IHateSpam is limited on features compared to our #1 ranked product SpamEater Pro. They will, however, allow you to determine how you want your confirmation and dialog boxes to appear, and enable automatic software and Spam updates.
Once installed, iHateSpam looks for email addresses that are not apart of your approved (friends) list to see if the email can be accepted without any challenge. iHateSpam also has a blocked (enemies) list to which you can add unwanted email addresses or domains after you receive them in your quarantine folder.
iHateSpam's installation process is time consuming, but they provide a step-by-step "Getting Started" process to acclimate you with their Spam filtering process. It will automatically populate your friends list. It also allows you to mark selected folders in your email program to check for additional friends. You have an option during every process of the "Getting Started" process to exit and skip the tutorial.
We did experience some stability problems with this version.
iHateSpam lacks the customization features like a lot of their competitors and you have to manually delete the quarantined emails whereas other spam filters allow you to setup automatic deletion.
We found that iHateSpam blocked a lot of Spam but it also blocked a lot of legitimate email.
Overall, iHateSpam does an adequate job at cleaning up the junk mail and spam from your system, you have to check your suspected spam folder to make sure iHateSpam didnāt delete an important message you were waiting for.
